HONOURING LOVE IN ACTION

This Sunday, in the context of celebrating “love” as exalted in 1 Corinthians 13, we will honour the long and valued ministry of CAC in our community. CAC has relied on the dedication and talents of many people over the years, people who have transformed “love” into action. It would be impossible to name them all, but it was Ken Griffiths who built the pantry for CAC at St. John’s.

Ken has blessed St. John’s with more than his carpentry skills. He has served as Chair of Trustees for more than thirty years, with a wisdom and wit that we have all come to cherish. This winter, Ken has decided that it is time to retire. We will miss his inimitable calm presence in the Chair, but we thank him for his years of service, and we are very happy to know that he will continue as a member of the Council of Ministries. Thank you Ken!

MEALS ON WHEELS

After another break necessitated by the on-and-on pandemic, Meals On Wheels is starting up again, as of next Tuesday, February 1. Joan Pitcairn, says that her team of shoppers, cooks, cleaners and drivers are all ready to go. Once again, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the aroma of home cooking will waft through the halls of the church, and a hot lunch will be delivered to thirty eagerly expectant Pointe Claire seniors. They are delighted at the news!

SHELTER MEALS FROM THE LAKESHORE TRINITY KITCHEN

Lakeshore Trinity United has been approached by a group of volunteers who wish to cook hot meals for clients of Halte-Transitions, an overnight shelter for homeless individuals, located in Pierrefonds. In times past, such meals have been prepared by volunteers in their homes, but this is no longer permitted. They therefore requested the use of our kitchen, which has acquired the necessary certification in order to work with Meals On Wheels. Their proposal to use the kitchen facilities once a week was brought to the Lakeshore Trinity Council of Ministries and approved on January 19.

The first meal was prepared on Monday of this week. Three volunteer cooks, led by Catherine Lee, cooked up a rotini, baked with Italian sausage, vegetables and cheese, all in a homemade tomato sauce. Catherine reports that 35 shelter clients were very pleased and grateful to receive a hot home cooked meal. She says: “We transferred it into five crock pots filled to the brim and they ate it all!”

We are happy to welcome Catherine and her team to our kitchen, and we pledge to support them in this important mission

MILK BAG MATTRESSES

Summerlea United Church in Lachine has had a long standing project, weaving milk bags into mattresses which are donated to The Open Door, a drop-in shelter in downtown Montreal. The bags are cut into strips, tied together and then woven on looms to make full length mats or smaller sit-upons. They are lightweight, easily cleaned and provide a little insulation and softness in a hard life. The Open Door is happy to receive as many of these mats as Summerlea can produce, and their team is continuing to make them, but the closure of churches due to COVID, has meant a sharp drop in donations of milk bags. Summerlea is therefore appealing for help. They need a LOT of bags! One mattress takes about 500!

We will be collecting milk bags at Lakeshore Trinity, even though the church is not yet open. There will be a box at the back door where you may leave them. Our custodian, George Provias, also works both at Summerlea United and The Open Door shelter. George is willing to ensure that the bags are taken regularly to the production team at Summerlea. Thank you George!

Marion Golden and Mary Guynan, seen here with their loom at Summerlea United, are part of a team of at least 10 ladies who work together to make milk bag mattresses for shelter clients in Montreal.

WE GIVE THANKS

  • The e-transfer procedure is outlined in the Happenings email..
  • Don’t forget to include your envelope number and indicate how you wish to have your offering divided. If not indicated, it will be designated as local offering.
  • For the month of January 2022: Everyone who writes a cheque for their offering should make it payable to St. John’s United Church. Even though the church is closed due to COVID, you can still drop your offering cheque in the mail slot.
  • For the moment there will be no change for people who use PAR*.

.

*Pre-authorized remittance (PAR) is a way to donate to the church through automatic withdrawals from a bank account or charges to a credit card (the latter not recommended as the service fee to the church is higher). Many of our Dorval-Strathmore friends use this easy method and changes can be made anytime. If anyone is interested in signing up or getting more information, please contact Joan LeVasseur at (514) 631-4455 or jblev@ca.inter.net
