MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Greetings, everyone.
Did you know that somewhere around the world, pretty much each day of the year is dedicated to the observance of something special? And little old February is no exception. This month includes recognitions for Spunky Old Broads Day, National Dark Chocolate Day, and Bike to Work Month. I don’t think that last one is celebrated in Canada during February!
February also includes Chinese New Year and Korean New Year, Black History Month, and Pink Shirt Day (for anti-bullying). So, I thought I’d write about our call to fighting racism, intolerance, bullying, and oppression. However, the more I wrote, the more I deleted. A voice (the Holy Spirit?) kept telling me to stop talking (or writing), and start listening. I became painfully aware that I am another older (okay, older middle-aged) white male doing a lot of talking. Don’t get me wrong… I will not remove myself from this conversation. None of us can. But, right now, my part in the conversation is to listen. To hear the stories of others. To understand, to support, to be challenged.
And so, my earlier drafts will remain deleted. Instead, I encourage all of us to use this month to listen to other voices. Hear the stories of others. And let that experience change us and the world we share with our neighbours and global family. Make good use of all the resources around us: the internet, the library, documentaries, podcasts, our friends.
Listen. Learn. Love.
Peace.
Rev. Steve

Milk Bags, And More Milk Bags!
Happenings readers responded generously to last week’s appeal for milk bags. By Monday morning, the bench outside the back door of the church was laden!
Lisa O’Brien reports that custodian, George Provias, delivered several hundred bags to Summerlea this week, ready to be woven into mattresses.
Well done everyone!
A SPECIAL VOTE OF THANKS to our Treasurer, Janet Hood-Morier, to whom has fallen the enormous (and ongoing) task of merging the financial affairs of our two congregations into one new entity. We are very grateful for the knowledge and care and the uncounted hours that she has brought to this complex project. Thank You Janet!
WE GIVE THANKS
- The e-transfer procedure is outlined in the Happenings email..
- Don’t forget to include your envelope number and indicate how you wish to have your offering divided. If not indicated, it will be designated as local offering.
- For the month of January 2022: Everyone who writes a cheque for their offering should make it payable to St. John’s United Church. Even though the church is closed due to COVID, you can still drop your offering cheque in the mail slot.
- For the moment there will be no change for people who use PAR* *Pre-authorized remittance (PAR) is a way to donate to the church through automatic withdrawals from a bank account or charges to a credit card (the latter not recommended as the service fee to the church is higher). Many of our Dorval-Strathmore friends use this easy method and changes can be made anytime. If anyone is interested in signing up or getting more information, please contact Joan LeVasseur at (514) 631-4455 or jblev@ca.inter.net
Rev. Steve Gillam can be reached by phone or text at (514) 235-9383 or by email at macduffsdad@hotmail.com.
