MATTHEW KABWE IS MARTIN LUTHER KING

This is Black History Month, and Matthew Kabwe is playing Martin Luther King Jr. in Saskatoon’s Persephone Theatre production of The Mountaintop, by Katori Hall. The play is set in a Memphis motel room on the eve of King’s assassination, as he questions his life and contributions to social justice.

Matthew’s reflections:

“For me, Martin Luther King Jr. is a bucket list character, someone I’ve always wanted to play.

It is Black History Month, so it is good to explore a story like this. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most important figures of the last 100 or 200 years. The things he was talking about or fighting for are still germane today – not just for black people in the U.S. and Canada and the world, but for everybody living in these countries. He is still very much relevant.”

Matthew’s mother, Maureen Scott Kabwe, co-chair of our Church in the World committee, offers these thoughts on the legacies we honour during Black History Month:

• “The end is reconciliation, is redemption, is the creation of the Beloved Community. It is this spirit and love that can transform opposers into friends. It is this type of understanding that will transform the gloom of the old age into the gladness of the new age… this love (which) will bring about miracles in (our) hearts.”

Martin Luther King Jr., Facing the Challenge of a New Age, 1960

• Nelson Mandela released from prison, the miracle of the end to South African Apartheid, February 11, 1990

• Archbishop Desmond Tutu: “I am because we are. We are all connected.”  South African Ubuntu theology

MONDAY MEALS FOR THE HOMELESS

On Monday afternoons in the church kitchen, Catherine Lee and her team of volunteer cooks are continuing to produce hot meals for the clients of the over night shelter, Halte-Transitions in Pierrefonds. Funding for the meals project comes largely from Angels of Mercy, a registered charity providing meals and clothing to homeless people in Montreal.

Catherine has long been closely involved in supporting the homeless population of our city. She is acutely aware of the challenges of life on the street and is committed and tireless in her efforts to bring some comfort to their lives. In addition to cooking hot meals, she is appealing to our congregation forwarm clothing, most especially men’s long underwear and socks. Also hot water bottles! A hot water bottle on a cold night can be a lifesaver.

As soon as we are back meeting and worshipping in the building, we will be providing places to collect these items.

WE GIVE THANKS

  • The e-transfer protocol is outlined in the Happenings email.
  • Don’t forget to include your envelope number and indicate how you wish to have your offering divided. If not indicated, it will be designated as local offering.
  • Until further notice, please continue to make offering cheques payable to St. John’s United Church. You can still drop them in the mail slot, even though the church is closed due to COVID.
  • For the moment there will be no change for people who use PAR*.

*Pre-authorized remittance (PAR) is a way to donate to the church through automatic withdrawals from a bank account or charges to a credit card (the latter not recommended as the service fee to the church is higher). Many of our Dorval-Strathmore friends use this easy method and changes can be made anytime. If anyone is interested in signing up or getting more information, please contact Joan Levasseur at (514) 631-4455 or jblev@ca.inter.net

MISSION AND SERVICE:GIVING TUESDAY INITIATIVE, FEBRUARY 21

Since COVID struck, visits to Canadian food banks have climbed 20 percent. Already, over 33 percent of food bank users are children. In 2022, food prices are predicted to rise another 5 to 7 percent. On February 21, The United Church of Canada asks us to consider supporting families by giving the gift of a meal through our Mission & Service partners. A gift of just $25 will provide a family of four with a warm, nutritious meal.

Rev. Steve Gillam can be reached by phone or text at (514) 235-9383 or by email at macduffsdad@hotmail.com.
