MINISTER’S MESSAGE

Greetings, everyone.

We officially start Spring this weekend. It’s time to let light in. The other day someone started an important discussion by asking the question: “Do we really believe in prayer?” The answer is yes. So, time to let more light into our dark world.

Along with our St. Edward’s friends, we will be hosting a prayer vigil next Saturday afternoon, March 26th. It will be a time for us to gather and pray for our Ukrainian sisters and brothers, pray for the world, pray for peace. The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a time of gathering, quiet meditation, and candle lighting. At 4:30 we will share group prayers and singing, along with some silent prayer. At 5:15 some people may wish to leave, but we will continue with more quiet meditation and prayer until 6:00 p.m.

Please spread the word about this important community event. Everyone is welcome.

Of course, we don’t have to wait until then to start praying! On Sunday morning we will be handing out simple blue and yellow yarn bracelets to anyone who wants them. It will be a daily reminder to us to take a moment and say a prayer. Now, a lot of people tell me that they don’t know any prayers. Or they never know what to say. So often our prayers are reflections of our needs, and end up sounding like a “honey-dew” list for God. Our God doesn’t need to be told what to do. God already cares. When we pray, we add our spirit and energy to the world. We connect human spirits with the divine spirit. So don’t worry about what you say. One word may be enough. “Peace.” “Hope.” “Strength.” “Help.”

Finally, our faith is expressed in our praying and in our acting. At the vigil (and at any time you want to do it), we will be collecting an offering for the Ukrainian people. There are many who are providing direct assistance and supplies to these people who have lost everything. And as we move forward together, the need will be even greater as people may need help relocating.

Thanks. I hope to see you Sunday, and on the 26th.

Peace.

Rev. Steve

THE RETURN OF COFFEE AFTER CHURCH!

Updated COVID guidelines now permit us to eat and drink at the church, provided that we remain seated and distanced while we do so.

The occasion last week of Rev. Steve’s birthday was all the incentive we needed to return to the much-loved tradition of Sunday morning coffee. We were invited to remain in the sanctuary after the postlude, the coffee urn was wheeled down the aisle and coffee was served to people where they sat. Following the coffee came a delicious chocolate birthday cake, baked by Mark Watson, and again delivered to people in the pews.

We intend to continue to provide coffee and tea in the sanctuary following the Sunday service. If you would like to participate, please stay in your place and chat with your neighbours. We will be pleased to serve you.

Feel free to bring your own coffee mug!

SALE AT VALOIS UNITED!

WE GIVE THANKS

  • The e-transfer procedure is outlined in the Happenings email..
  • Don’t forget to include your envelope number and indicate how you wish to have your offering divided. If not indicated, it will be designated as local offering.
  • For the month of January 2022: Everyone who writes a cheque for their offering should make it payable to St. John’s United Church. Even though the church is closed due to COVID, you can still drop your offering cheque in the mail slot.
  • For the moment there will be no change for people who use PAR*.Â

.

*Pre-authorized remittance (PAR) is a way to donate to the church through automatic withdrawals from a bank account or charges to a credit card (the latter not recommended as the service fee to the church is higher). Many of our Dorval-Strathmore friends use this easy method and changes can be made anytime. If anyone is interested in signing up or getting more information, please contact Joan LeVasseur at (514) 631-4455 or jblev@ca.inter.net
