To all the members of the Lakeshore Trinity and St. Edward’s faith community:
Greetings!
You are invited to a special service with both of our congregations worshipping together. June 5th is the day of Pentecost, when we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the early faith community, as well as embrace the comforting and challenging presence of the Spirit in our lives and work. We recognize the day as the birthday of the Church. So, it makes sense that we should celebrate together!
We’re giving you advance notice for two reasons (well, three reasons really – we want to make sure you mark the date on your calendar and plan to attend!). Firstly, the service will start at 10:00 a.m. that morning.
Secondly, we plan to pray the words of The Lord’s Prayer, The Our Father, in as many languages that we can. On that first Christian Pentecost (see Acts 11), the Spirit enabled all of those gathered outside to hear the disciples praising God in their own language. Celebrating that moment, we will say the words of our prayer in the language of our choice, out loud, making a beautiful noise for all the world. English and French are welcome, of course, but if you speak another language, we encourage you to be prepared to pray the Lord’s Prayer with those words. We want to give you lots of preparation time in case you are able to speak or read another language but may need to look-up and write-down the words to the prayer.
It will be a Spirit-filled, joyful celebration with music and praise and dance… and even cake! See you then.
Peace
Fr. Mike & Rev. Steve

A GIFT FROM MOUNTAINSIDE UNITED CHURCH
Have you noticed the new cross gracing our sanctuary? This was the Sunday School banner from Mountainside United Church, whose building has now been sold. It comes to us thanks to Margaret de Castro, who was music director at Mountainside until her retirement last year, (and whom we are delighted to have now singing in our choir!)
The production of the banner was a congregational project. The individual squares were designed by a couple of Mountainside members, who prepared and packaged the materials in small bags. Families were then invited take these home to be sewn, adding decorative touches as they wished. Meanwhile, the frame was built by another church member. The completed squares were returned and assembled on the frame to create a double-sided banner.
The children took turns carrying the banner, leading the Sunday School parade to their classes after children’s time in the Sunday worship. Margaret reports that the honour of bearing the banner was highly prized.
Thank you, Margaret, for bringing this lovely memento to us here
at Lakeshore Trinity.
MASKS IN CHURCH
Although public health regulations no longer require masks in most public spaces, including churches, we continue to recommend the wearing of a mask when moving around in the church. We thank you for your understanding.
REGIONAL COUNCIL MEETING AT LAKESHORE TRINITY
We at Lakeshore Trinity have the pleasure of hosting the first in-person meeting in two years, of our Nakon:haka Regional Council. The annual spring meeting will take place at the church on Saturday, June 4.
Fiona Wardrop is appealing to willing bakers for contributions to the event. Items (cookies, squares, muffins) should be individually wrapped and may be delivered to the church on Friday evening, June 3 between 4:00PM and 6:00PM.
NO MOW MAY
Maureen Scott Kabwe, and the Church in Society Committee, remind us to rejoice in the beauty of the dandelions. Left unmowed through the month of May, they provide much needed nectar and pollen for wild bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.
SANCTUARY BIRDS
The church at 98 Aurora has long been a sanctuary, and not only for the people who worship there. The honeycomb block facade of the steeple has provided shelter for generations of local birds. Their chattering songs have accompanied our worship for many years, although some might argue that their contributions are more competition than accompaniment. Our relationship with the birds became less accommodating when they began to find their way inside the building in search of more luxurious quarters. Bert Patterson and Rod Troy have been quite inventive in their efforts to thwart these aspirations. Bert recounted in last year’s Property Committee report:
“Following our dispute with grackles in the sanctuary last year, we experimented with methods to discourage their nesting in the area above the passageway behind the front of the sanctuary. A flashing strobe light proved to be successful. However, enterprising sparrows have, from time to time, entered though a small hole at the very top of the wall behind the cross in the sanctuary (you can see it when sitting in church). A surprisingly simple remedy (not solution) is the Joan Shrag–Vera Balleine procedure of escorting the birds into the south wing hallway and out the front door.”
The issue persists, as evidenced by the flypast during last Sunday’s service. As Bert observes, it’s still a good idea to check your seat before you sit down in church.
In the latest salvo on behalf of the church, a mason has been engaged to patch up the hole in the sanctuary.
Stay tuned for further developments.
