MINISTER’S MESSAGE

Welcome September!

No matter how old I get, or how many new experiences I have, or how long it has been since I sat in a classroom, every September still feels like the start of something new. After a summer of re-creation and re-connecting, it’s time to move into a new chapter. Ready and refreshed. And perhaps a bit unsure.

There is a sense of uncertainty in the air. Will the pandemic allow us to get back to normal? And are we even interested in what we once considered “normal”? Almost everyone I’ve talked with recently has spoken of this un-nameable feeling of things changing.

Welcome September! May the beauty of the changing season around us give us courage and fill us with possibility as we experience changes in our world and in our lives. Change brings growth, and growth is life. During this season we will be focusing on our relationship with God’s gift of creation. Reflecting on how we have lived with the earth, refocusing our responsibilities to care for all life, and rejoicing in the wonder of God’s promise.

So, we get ready for what this new season will bring us. We will be ready to live our faith… being the reflection of light and love, speaking out for justice and peace, nurturing life and hope for all peoples and all living things.

Welcome September!

“Happily we bask in this warm September sun, which illuminates all creatures.” (Henry David Thoreau)

Peace.
Rev. Steve

FAREWELL AND THANKS TO RAFAEL
At the end of June, Rafael de Castro announced his retirement from his position as Director of Music for Lakeshore Trinity United. We thank him for his devoted service and excellent musicianship over the past three years, and we wish him well as he joins his wife, Margaret, in retirement.

THE NEW FACE OF MUSIC AT LAKESHORE TRINITY
We are happy to welcome (or welcome back) Dr. Jan Krejcar as our Director of Music for the next year. Jan is no stranger to the folk of St. John’s, having served as music director for 13 years, leading up to 2019.

Jan introduces himself:
Although I was born almost 4,000 miles away in then-Communist Czechoslovakia and grew up 2,000 miles in the other direction, in Alberta, I live only a short walk away from Lakeshore Trinity United Church. The best way to get to know me would be to visit me at home, where the paraphernalia with which I surround myself would probably be an effective biography. Tucked away in some filing cabinets, I keep my certificates from the Czech conservatory where I studied piano, diplomas from McGill at which I completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in piano performance, and programs from concerts, both solo and with some orchestras—the stuff musicians usually have on hand to fill their resumes. You’d find toys, for which my three children are becoming too old, computers, video games, and many assorted musical instruments, only a few of which I can actually play.

I have bookshelves full of books. I have read only about a third of them, although that doesn’t seem to stop me from continually buying more whenever possible. You’d find dictionaries, style guides, and other academic resources—I use these in my other profession in editing research. You’d find music I use as an accompanist, some choir and orchestral music from previous experiences directing ensembles, and even some hymnbooks from my many years at St. John’s United, hymnbooks that I neglected to return. Strewn around there would be all kinds of bric-a-brac from my many hobbies and projects, mostly started but never finished. There are several shelves of books on sailing, as that is one of my main hobbies to which I dedicate a lot of time.

Indeed, you’d probably not find me at home at all. I always say practising piano is for amateurs, so in the summer I am usually down by the lake, either fixing the boat or sailing it; and in the winter, you’d find that the corner in which I keep my skis is empty, that is unless it’s a Thursday or Sunday or some other day in which I’m at Lakeshore Trinity or at some other event or concert, feeding my passion for music and music-making. Come to think of it, you’d probably be there too.
Jan
Welcome to Lakeshore Trinity, Jan!

If you don’t know Jan, come on down and say hello. He is a fine and friendly fellow as well as a talented musician. If you do know him, then come on down and welcome him back!

THE NEW MINISTER NEXT DOOR

Congratulations to Rev. Linda Buchanan, who has been called to ministry at Beaconsfield United, our next-door-neighbour church! Linda and her family were members of St. John’s-St. Edward from Linda’s earliest childhood and she was a candidate for the ministry from St. John’s, so this is a happy welcome home.

We wish you joy and blessing, Linda, as you set off on this new journey.
