MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Rev. Steve Gillam

Greetings, everyone.

There is often a song dancing around in my head. This week’s chart topper is “June is bustin’ out all over”, a song from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. Not a favourite, necessarily, neither the song nor the musical, but I guess the DJ in my brain has chosen this one because June does, indeed, seem to be the month when life is bustin’ out all around us. Flowers, leaves, outdoor activities, gatherings with family and friends. Lots of great things happening here at LTUC, too. More about that later.

It’s also a busy month for national and international special observances and celebrations. I’ve decided to share some of them with you, because there are some important things and people remembered in these events. If even one of them catches your spirit and intrigues you, I encourage you to look it up and learn more. Add it to your prayers, find out what you can do, or just know that life is better when we’re informed. Here’s what June brings:

June is National Indigenous History month, as well as Italian, Filipino, and Portuguese Heritage Month, and the launch of Pride season.

3rd – World Bicycle Day (sounds weird, but a big part of caring for the environment);
4th – International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression;
5th – World Environment Day;
8th – World Oceans Day;
10th – the 98th anniversary of the founding of the United Church of Canada.
15th – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day;
18th – International Day for Countering Hate Speech, and of course, Father’s Day;
19th – Juneteenth;
20th – World Refugee Day;
21st – National Indigenous Peoples Day, and the summer solstice… the first day of summer!
The 21st is also National Music Day;
27th – Canadian Multiculturalism Day.

So, let the warmth of this beautiful month inspire you to read/listen/learn more, and connect with others and the earth. And, as always, giving God thanks for diversity, joy, and the work of justice.

God bless.
Rev. Steve

PENTECOST AT BEACONSFIELD UNITED
There was a joyous celebration at Beaconsfield United last Sunday when the West Island Riverside cluster gathered to celebrate Pentecost. It was an exciting, uplifting event, full of lively music and colour, and alive with the Holy Spirit. We were inspired by the message given by Rev. Elisabeth Jones, from Cedar Park United, and our own Rev. Steve Gillam. The service was followed by a traditional Nigerian lunch, served by the members of Beaconsfield United’s Nigerian community. Virginia Bryce reports that the food was plentiful and delicious. She particularly enjoyed trying deep-fried plantain.
