We welcome Maureen Scott Kabwe as our worship leader this morning. Maureen will be addressing the development of Indigenous mission and ministry within the United Church of Canada.

Maureen is well qualified to understand the position of Indigenous ministries in the United Church. For nearly 20 years, she served as minister at Kahnawake United Church, and previous to that, beginning in 1979, she worked for many years in Education for Justice at the United Church of Canada, both at the Presbytery and Conference levels. She is currently a member of our Regional Council Committee on Living Into Right Relations.

Maureen also has a long history in this congregation. Her parents, Audrey and Don Scott moved to Pointe Claire in 1972 and joined St. John’s. Audrey was a Sunday School teacher, and Don, the superintendent. Maureen brought her young sons Robert and Matthew to the church, where they sang in the junior choir.

UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA REMIT
In the pursuit of truth and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, the United Church proposes to create a space for an autonomous Indigenous church within the United Church of Canada. This is in response to a motion put forward by the National Indigenous Council, and approved by The UCC General Council in 2018. The motion is based on an extensive period of discernment within Indigenous communities of faith, resulting in a document called “Calls to the Church”. This document articulates the Indigenous Church’s vision for the ongoing development of their mission and ministry within The United Church of Canada, acknowledging their rights to their own spiritual identities and to self-determination. You may read this document here: Calls to the Church

Because this will involve a change in church structure that will alter our Basis of Union, it requires the approval of every regional council and each pastoral charge. The Church has therefore authorized a remit, to be voted on before March 31st of 2024. In the months to come, we will be exploring further the background to this remit.
