MINISTER’S MESSAGE

Greetings, everyone.

With the afternoons getting darker, and our church building abuzz with Bazaar activity, not to mention Christmas music being played everywhere we go… it’s obvious that the Christmas season is fast approaching. And I say, “YAY!” There will be lots of special services and celebrations happening in the coming weeks, and we’ll tell you more about them soon, but here are two things you might want to know now.

The third Sunday of Advent – this year, December 17th – has traditionally been the Sunday for the nativity pageant with the Sunday School. While we continue to have many wonderful children in our faith family, we don’t have an active Sunday School right now. But the telling of the nativity story, with angels in tinsel-garland halos and shepherds in bathrobes and tea-towel-headgear, is such a special part of our celebrations… so… YOU are invited to be part of the story!

On that Sunday, we are encouraging everyone to come dressed as a character from the nativity story. Anyone you want. Mary, Joseph, an angel, a shepherd, or a sheep. Be creative! How about the innkeeper? A midwife? A cow at the manger? Everyone is welcome in the stable for the retelling of this blessed story.

You can be as detailed as you like in your costume, or go simple: a cotton ball pinned to your lapel makes a completely acceptable sheep costume! (But, I hope you’ll think big!)

During the service, we’ll celebrate the sacred story in the voices of all of these characters, and together make the nativity come alive. For example, all angels might lead us in the opening prayer; the Marys might guide us in the words of the magnificat; etc. And, for the most part, all from your seat… for those of you who might be worried about having to get up and do something uncomfortable.

That Sunday, we will also light the third Advent candle, the one for JOY. What a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of Christmas together. And… we also have a baptism planned for that day. Can’t wait! I thought you might want to know now and have time to think about your costume…

And on December 24th… It is the fourth Sunday of Advent as well as Christmas Eve. Some congregations are cancelling the morning service… but, it’s Christmas! So, we will have a Christmas communion service in the morning (our usual time, 11 am). The service will be a bit shorter, to give extra time for everyone navigating family meal schedules that day. And then we’ll meet for our Christmas Eve service at 7:00 pm. Mark it on your calendar!

As I said, more details to come, but I hope this helps with your planning.

Looking forward to see y’all at the Bazaar!

Peace.
Rev. Steve
