MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Rev. Steve Gillam
Greetings, everyone. I hope you have been enjoying this colourful and beautifully warm Autumn.
In our last Happenings, I started sharing stories of my ministry journey, starting with the event that I remember as the beginning of my sense of call to ordained ministry. If you will continue to indulge me, here is another memory.
I was a student minister in the Eastern Townships. There were lots of small rural churches that didn’t have a full time minister, which meant many opportunities to lead worship as a guest preacher. Now, I was 19/20 years old and hadn’t started my theological training, so felt a little unequipped, unprepared, unworthy. What did I know about life? But the people in these congregations were so supportive and encouraging. With all the great teachers I would have over the next few years, these people were the ones who gave me a solid foundation and an understanding of church.
There were a few people who gifted me with their family Bibles. You know the ones I mean? They’re huge and heavy, ornate leather covers, often with a metal clasp. The center pages included beautiful places to record family births, marriages, and deaths. These people gave me their family treasures claiming that there was no one in their families who would appreciate them. I was touched. Still am. I felt that they were not just giving me an old Bible, but entrusting me with their sacred family memories.
I still have that feeling with every baptism, marriage, funeral, or other important event. We not only share these important moments with our own families, but with our faith family. And sometimes we share more with each other than we do with our own families. There is an inherent sense of trust and support found in church families.
So, as I take a moment to remember those who have welcomed me into their lives, as well as all of those who have become part of my faith family (like you!), I encourage you to take time to reflect, remember and give thanks that you, too, are part of something bigger. Family.
Peace.
