MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Rev. Steve Gillam

Greetings, everyone.

Thanks for your support of this current theme for my Happenings’ messages. Let’s continue with more of my ministry journey memories.

In my last year as a student minister, I did my final internship with the good people of Union Church in Ste. Anne de Bellevue (now Merging Waters). Not only was I blessed to have a great supervisor and mentor in the late Rev. Craig Chaplin, I worked with a wonderful Lay Training Committee of four congregation members who met with me regularly. One – in a “small world” moment – was Heather, daughter of former Dorval Strathmore member Lucille Ayerst. Today, however, I’m remembering a man named Gordon.

He had that dry British-style sense of humour, and could say a lot with one sentence. After one of my early sermons there, he came up to me and simply said, “Remember, you are not landing a plane.” If you think I talk a lot with my hands now, thank Gordon… It could be worse!

I preached on Remembrance Day Sunday that year. Growing-up in a small town and being very involved in Scouting, I marched to the cenotaph each year: Remembrance Day was and is important to me. But, I was starting then to feel that the remembering could be so much more. Remembering forward, if you will.

Apparently I wasn’t alone. After the service, Gordon said to me, “That’s the first Remembrance Day sermon that didn’t make me want to throw up.” Wise words. Weird words, but wise. Thanks, Gordon.

I have been blessed to have known many people like him on my journey. I hope you’ll take a moment to remember the people in your life who have helped you see things in a new way, adding perspective and colour.

And, I hope to see you on Sunday, as we remember together.

Peace.
Rev. Steve

HARVEST SUPPER: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27
On Saturday we chopped and peeled, we chatted, we set tables, we laughed, we mixed and stirred, we chatted some more, and when we were done, all was in readiness for Sunday’s Harvest Supper. On Sunday afternoon nearly 100 people gathered for roast ham and potatoes, salads and homemade desserts, a fitting celebration of the blessings of creation at this harvest time. Thanks to all who helped bring the feast together and thanks to all who came to share it.

FUNDSCRIP
Our Fundscrip fundraiser is ongoing. Gift cards from Fundscrip are the perfect gift for those hard-to-buy-for people on your Christmas list. Or why not order gift cards to pay for your Christmas shopping? It’s a Canada-wide fundraising program in which our congregation members pay for our everyday shopping (i.e., groceries, gas, gifts, etc.) with gift cards bought from FundScrip. A percentage of the cards purchased is donated to LTUC. There is no cost to us. Simply order your gift cards and use them to pay for your purchases when you shop. Please see Lynne Lesiak after church on Sunday or email her at mark.lesiak@sympatico.ca for more information or to place an order.

SOCK IT TO ME MONTREAL
Another chilly Montreal winter will soon be upon us, a difficult time for those without housing. During the month of November, Stepping Up/Un Pas vers l’Avant is trying to bring a little comfort with their 10th annual Sock It To Me Montreal campaign. They are collecting new socks to distribute to those in need in the city. Doris McConnell is encouraging us to participate by donating new socks. There is a collection box at Gilbert and Daughter (49 Donegani, Pointe Claire). Or you may bring them to the church, and Doris will see that they are delivered.

Doris also reminds us that food collections continue at the church. Last week a load was taken to On Rock. The next delivery will go to West Island Mission, which is reporting difficulty keeping up with increasing requests for help.

Our donations are always gratefully received.

HELP REQUEST FOR SERVICE PROJECTIONS
Maf Magas puts together and projects the services that we see on the screen at the front of the church each week, something we greatly appreciate. We are looking for someone who can run the projection from time to time if Maf is unavailable on a Sunday morning. If you think you can help out in this way, please leave a message at the church office at 514-697-6459.
