MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Rev. Steve Gillam
Greetings, everyone.
Let’s get back to the Retiring Reverend Reminisces series. March 8th is International Women’s Day. Some countries declare the entire month of March as Women’s History month. However, in Canada, we designate October as Women’s History month, coinciding with the commemoration of the October 18, 1929 legal decision in this country to declare women as persons.
So much there to unpack and reflect on. But today I want to take this opportunity to give thanks for the women who have shaped my life and ministry. Clergy (thanks Rev. Jane Aikman), coworkers (you rock Lisa O’Brien), teachers, authors, theologians, and so many lay women in the congregations in which I have served as well as in the larger church. And that includes so many of you.
However, I want to take a moment to give thanks for a few women who have passed-on now but whose love and influence continue to inspire me. Namely Dorothy Baird, Pat Lejeune, Betty Weir, and Lucille Ayerst. Of course, there have been, and are, so many others. Fierce and faithful women. Strong and nurturing mama-bears who always had my back. Women who helped teach me how to be a better me.
The prophet Isaiah compares God to a mother comforting her children. Jesus says he is a mother hen spreading her wings to protect her children.
May our Mothering God continue to comfort, protect, and bless you all.
Peace.
Rev. Steve

LENTEN OFFERING
Lenten offering envelopes are available in the pews. Donations will be divided among Montreal City Mission, Saint Columba House, West Island Mission, On Rock and Dorval Community Care.
MONTREAL CITY MISSION
Our Lenten offering at Lakeshore Trinity is distributed among our four food banks, but also supports Montreal City Mission.
Founded in 1910, and a ministry of the United Church of Canada since 1957, Montreal City Mission (MCM) addresses the challenges of poverty and social exclusion. Open, diverse, and interfaith, MCM seeks to work together with those pushed to the margins in order to create an inclusive, welcoming and just community for all. Among their services:
The Just Solutions Clinic improves access to justice for individuals from vulnerable groups in society (refugees and others) by providing free information, support, accompaniment in the defense of their rights and in their understanding of their responsibilities.
The Roger Snelling Clinic provides legal information, workshops, accompaniment, representation and various other services to vulnerable seniors.
By developing partnerships with the ecumenical community, grass roots groups, government, corporations and academia, Montreal City Mission draws on all dynamic sectors of society in its quest to create an inclusive, caring community.
