JUNE: NATIONAL INDIGENOUS HISTORY MONTH
Maureen Scott Kabwe, Church in the World Committee Co-Chair writes:
The month of June is National Indigenous Peoples Month.
June 21st (summer solstice) is National Indigenous Peoples Day.
land acknowledgement
Every Sunday, before worship at Lakeshore Trinity, we read this Land Acknowledgement on the front screen.  Recently I took a online study offered by the United Church of Canada, on healing thesettler colonialism that established our country, its laws and institutions. We looked at the causes of Indigenous land loss, cultural and language loss, the loss of children and family breakdown, and the Church Doctrine of Discovery. We explored all this through the stories of our own ancestors’ arrival in Canada. We got in touch with family history we may not even have known about – where they came from, why they left their home, whose territory they settled on, who was dispossessed by their arrival.
no trespassing painting
The painting, No Trespassing, shows the Pembina Escarpment in southern Manitoba, land just beside my great-grandparents’ farm, where I spent childhood summers. Today I ask “Who did the trespassing?” The UCC study was an unsettling and profound learning for the 100+ people from across Canada who joined in, and was a step toward Right Relations. Perhaps I can offer a reconciliation gathering later this year, if there is interest.
One step towards reconciliation that is available now: Resilience Montreal, on the corner of Atwater and Ste. Catherine, offers meals and shelter and support to the Indigenous homeless population, recently in the news because of the difficulty of finding residences for many of them. BOOK NOOK NEWS:
In honour of National Indigenous History Month, on display in the hall from the shelves of our mini-library, is the title: The Other Side of the River: from Church Pew to Sweat Lodge. The author, the Rev. Alf Dumont, engagingly talks of living between the worlds of Indigenous and of Christian spirituality, and of building bridges between the two. This book is a current recommendation of the United Church Bookstore.
Also on display are a few of the Nook’s richly illustrated items.
Please borrow from this selection for your relaxing summer perusal.
