MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Rev. Steve Gillam

Greetings, everyone.

Welcome to Lent! We had a great start to the season on Tuesday evening, “Ash Wednesday Eve”, and now our journey begins.

This is the season of 40 days before Easter. Remember, the six Sundays aren’t included because they’re considered mini-resurrection days. It is a time of preparation… a spiritual spring-cleaning.

Lent, like life itself, is a time of duality. We experience light and dark, pain and joy, confession and forgiveness. Even the name of this special time reflects this reality. “Lent” comes from an old English word that means lengthen, referring to the lengthening of days as the world around us opens itself up to light and warmth. It’s what we do during Lent – clean the windows of our soul to be able to welcome the light and warmth of God’s love experienced at Easter.

However, it is also the root of the French word “lente”. Slow. This isn’t a season of rushing things. We dig deep, we experience, we reflect, we grow. And that takes time. And work. So, let’s embrace this sacred time and prepare for inspiration, love, and new beginnings. God is with us on the journey!

Peace.
Rev. Steve

COMING UP: APRIL 6,13,20,27, 2024

The actors are rehearsing, the costumes are being sewn, and the kitchen crew is already at work preparing for the dinner. Last week in our kitchen, 80 pounds of potatoes were cooked and mashed, and made into these delicious cheesy galettes, now safely frozen and waiting for showtime!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • Spread the word! This is a congregational event, and our major fundraiser for this year. Those of us who have seen the Dorval-Strathmore productions will remember how enjoyable and entertaining those evenings were!
  • Ticket price of $50.00 per person includes a three course meal. Tickets can be purchased only through the church office. Call, or leave a message with Lisa at 514-697-6459, or email: lakeshoretrinityunited@gmail.com
  • All seating must be reserved ahead. There will be no ticket sales at the door.

WINE AND BEER AT THE MURDER MYSTERY DINNER
Our congregation at Lakeshore Trinity is a blending of two communities with different traditions regarding the serving of wine and spirits in the church building. St. John’s had a no-alcohol policy. Dorval-Strathmore permitted the serving of alcohol under certain circumstances, for instance, the sale of beer and wine at their famous Murder Mystery Dinner Theatres.

As a new congregation, Lakeshore Trinity has not yet established its own alcohol policy. With preparations for our first Murder Mystery dinner theatre well underway, our Council of Ministries voted at the meeting on January 16, 2024 to approve the sale of beer and wine at this event.

The process of determining our own policy will be allowed the time and prayer and thoughtful consultation of our members that it deserves. We will go forward as one community of faith.

THE BOOK NOOK
In this month of February we observe both Black History Month and the beginning of Lent. To mark these occasions relevant items hiding in our mini-library will be out at the back of the sanctuary. Please do have a look, and borrow.

We highlight:
Reflections on Emancipation and Anti-Black Racism in Canada. This work, with United Church connections, is a diverse collection of articles, readable in whole or in part.
Jesus and then Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Church, a “fable” in which Jesus and Simon Peter appear back on earth in the form of two Jewish women!
The Last Week, by Marcus J. Borg & John Dominic Crossan. This is a highly recommended work on “what the Gospels really teach about Jesus’s final days in Jerusalem.” That there are three copies in the Nook, plus Rev. Steve’s own copy available for borrowing, attest to the high regard for this publication, also that it is the basis for the current Zoom Bible study at our neighboring Beaconsfield United Church.
Also worthy of mention is this year’s United Church Bookstore’s special promotion for Black History Month: The Long Road Home, by Montrealer Debra Thompson. Rated an “instant bestseller” this book is in the Pointe-Claire library as well as in-store at Librairie Clio in the Plaza Pointe-Claire.

BROADVIEW MAGAZINE

It is time once again to order your copy of the United Church magazine “Broadview”. Broadview is constantly in touch with people from all over the United Church, those in the ministry as well as the folks in the pews. The magazine provides a place where people can voice their thoughts, their fears, and their faith. It is also a place where they can find articles and columns by people who ask timely questions and look for answers from a Christian Perspective.

Cost is $30.00. Please make your cheque payable to “Broadview” and leave it in the church office. If you have any questions, you may contact Lisa at the church office 514-697-6459.

The deadline for orders is March 26th 2024.

OUR CHAIR OF COUNCIL ONSTAGE

Mark Watson will be performing in the The Hudson Village Theatre production of the musical comedy “Curtains”. March 7th – 17th, 2024, in Hudson. For information, go to: Hudson Village Theatre or phone: 450-458-5361

Mark tells us:

Curtains is a show about a lovelorn composer who regrets the loss of his lyricist and lady love. Can he win her back? Has she taken up with another man? Will he ever figure out the harmony in that duet in the second act? There are murders, blackmail, a musical within the musical, a singing and dancing detective who yearns to be an actor and has a thing for the prime suspect.

Come out and see!
